Somewhere
Over a period of several years, Lisa Klapstock worked in cultural bookstores in Berlin, Paris, and New York where she photographed books and the people interacting with them. The result is Somewhere, an artist’s book that reflects her ongoing interest in camera-vision and its relationship to visual perception, and her exploration of abstract photography.
The book of full-bleed colour photographs combines montage-like images of book covers and fragments of the rooms in which they’re displayed, with close-up pictures of people looking at books, and those engaged in the haptic experience of touching and holding books. Somewhere incorporates these different kinds of photographs into a unified body of work through a formally composed visual narrative. The images unfold in a filmic sequence that reveals the nature of the subject in a slow, meditative way via a journey from abstraction to realism and back again.
Somewhere is as much about photography and perception as it is a celebration of the book as a relevant contemporary medium and a material artefact.
